The Magic Flute
Role
Costume and Set Designer
Genre
Hypothetical Theatre Production
Location
Regents Park Open Air Theatre
Date
October - December 2020
In this second year university unit, I redesigned Mozart's The Magic Flute using 18th-century traditional settings of the opera with a Tim Burton-esque twist. In my designs I play up the contrast between the Rococo extravagance of the period and the French Revolutionary style that was rising against it to highlight the themes of enlightenment and maturity present in the script.
The concept guides both the set and costume design and the two themes were used to differentiate character worlds and locations. The set design portrays the overcoming of a hierarchical and excessive society and the creation of a new world built on top of the past with each level in the set - becoming more natural and simplified as you move up. The same concept also guides the costume journeys of different characters, creating a cohesive and visually stunning production.
